the real question is why do i keep choosing messy hobbies?

“Why do you keep wasting money
on new paints and canvas
and brushes and paper
when we could already tell you
that you’re just going to be…
bad?”
I paint the scenes I want to see.
I paint the places I wish I was.
I paint the escapes I wish I had.
I paint portraits of my friends
who I don’t get to see very often
so I have something to keep them close.
I paint to get my emotions out
when I cannot find the words
or cannot follow the train of thought.
I paint because when I get colour
all over my hands and arms and face,
it reminds me that I am here
and I am real
and I am my own person
and I will do what I want.
Yes, I will never be one of the great masters of art,
but that’s not why I do it.
I paint because I can,
I paint because I enjoy it,
and that’s all.
